Ask almost anyone in Bengaluru what they dread most about April and May, and water comes up before traffic, before the heat, before anything else. Taps running dry, tanker trucks queued outside apartment gates, WhatsApp groups full of borewell gossip โ€” it's become as much a part of the city's summer as the jacaranda trees blooming purple.

A city drinking from two sources โ€” and stretching both

Bengaluru currently runs on two water supplies at once. The BWSSB (Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board) delivers roughly 1,460 million litres a day (MLD) of Cauvery river water, piped in from over 100 kilometres away. Alongside that, the city draws an estimated 1,372 MLD from groundwater โ€” nearly as much as the Cauvery supply itself. In other words, almost half of what Bengaluru drinks and bathes in comes straight out of the ground beneath it, not a river.

The borewells are running out of room to dig

That groundwater dependence has a cost, and it's measurable. Water tables in the core city have dropped by around five metres in recent years. On the outskirts โ€” the newer City Municipal Corporation areas and the 110 villages absorbed into Bengaluru's expanding limits โ€” the decline is far steeper: 10 to 15 metres. Every dry borewell means another one drilled deeper, which means a water table that recovers a little less each monsoon than it's drawn down each summer.

Drilling a new borewell isn't a fix. It's a way of borrowing water the ground hasn't finished paying back from last time.

What a "water crisis" actually costs a household

For residents without a reliable connection, water arrives by tanker โ€” a 12,000-litre load running around โ‚น1,200 in a normal year under the BWSSB's Sanchari Cauvery scheme, but climbing sharply during peak shortage periods, with private tanker prices reported as high as โ‚น2,850 in the worst stretches. The state government has had to step in more than once to cap tanker prices directly, which tells you how quickly an ordinary utility bill can turn into a real financial strain for a household during a bad summer.

Cauvery V Stage: the relief valve, half-open

The most significant recent development is Cauvery Water Supply Scheme Stage V, commissioned in October 2024, designed to bring an additional 775 MLD into the city. As of the most recent figures, it has crossed 50% coverage, with over 1.75 lakh new connections already drawing roughly 400 MLD. Combined with a healthy 2025 monsoon that left reservoirs in good shape, the outlook for summer 2026 is genuinely more comfortable than the crisis years before it โ€” but "more comfortable" isn't the same as "solved."

Why this isn't over yet

Cauvery V Stage's coverage is still expanding, not complete โ€” the 110 villages and newer BBMP wards at the city's edge, the areas with the steepest groundwater decline, are also the last to get piped Cauvery water. And even where new supply arrives, it doesn't undo years of over-drawn groundwater overnight; aquifers recover on the timescale of good monsoons repeated over years, not a single wet season. The relief this year is real, but it's relief from a symptom the underlying cause โ€” a city that grew its water demand faster than its water infrastructure โ€” is still working through.
